🇨🇦 Canada opens permanent residency for foreign doctors

Starting in 2026, international doctors working temporarily in Canada can get permanent residency through a new Express Entry pathway: 📌 5,000 spots above current immigration levels 📌 Must have 1+ year of Canadian experience and a job offer 📌 Provinces/territories can nominate doctors; work permits processed in 14 days

The CMA says this will help fill doctor shortages and let 13,000 trained doctors already in Canada finally work in their field.

The Medical Council of Canada (MCC) welcomes Canada’s new immigration measures for internationally trained doctors as an important step toward reducing Canada’s health workforce shortages.

As an organization committed to supporting internationally trained doctors on their pathway to Canadian licensure, the MCC recognizes that bringing health care to all Canadians requires action at all levels of government. While credentialing and licensing are handled at the provincial/territorial level, the federal government is taking action to align immigration with health care needs across the country.

Today’s announcement by the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, introduces a new Express Entry category for internationally trained doctors already working in Canada on a temporary basis, thereby increasing their access to permanent residence invitations. Additionally, expedited work permits will now be available for doctors nominated by a province or territory.

These measures will strengthen both recruitment and retention of doctors in Canada.
